TODAYonline | Commentary | Saudi Arabia vs the Arab Spring

Are you trying to understand the Saudi position? This article may give you some insight.

What struck me were a few things, not the least of which is that public demonstrations are considered un-Islamic by King's advisory council. Money to address housing concerns of Saudi young couples to the tune of $130 billion US will help within the kingdom. Dissent is viewed as inappropriate unless given in private by adviser to the king. Foreign relations are more complicated and vary by country. No love for Gaddafi, but not rushing to stand with losing side. Bahrain, play Shia card. Syria, Assad is not admired, but instability could affect Saudi Arabia negatively. Yemen has lots of Al Quaeda and armed radicals looking enviously across the border at Saudi wealth. It is a lot to keep up with these days for the King.
